Discipleship

Rev. John Craig Murrow, Associate Executive Minister, Discipleship

DISCIPLESHIP…the ongoing, lifelong process of growing to live more fully as a follower of Jesus Christ.

ELEMENTS OF DISCIPLESHIP

  • DEEPENING – growing in relationship with God and others (Acts 2:41-42)
  • EQUIPPING – growing in giftedness in order to serve (Ephesians 4:11-12)
  • MINISTERING – growing in effective service in the community (James 1:22-25)
  • REPRODUCING – growing in the number of healthy disciples (Acts 8:29-37)

The Discipleship Committee of the Philadelphia Baptist Association has as its primary purpose

  • To focus on the lifelong process of followers of Jesus Christ growing from early stages of commitment to becoming mature followers;
  • Provide ways to keep discipleship and disciple making before the churches;
  • Encourage pastors and lay persons to participate in opportunities for personal Christian growth and to help their churches become healthy learning congregations;
  • Shaping and reframing the way local congregations help people grow toward mature discipleship;
  • Moving from the 20 th to 21 st century models and practices, creating an atmosphere and designing a plan for effective discipleship.

Some of the opportunities to assist churches and individuals in discipleship growth include:

  • Decision:Disciple Intensive Course, participants commit to a year long training and take learning back to church for ongoing discipleship growth;
  • Region-wide dinners, programs, panel discussions and speakers focusing on spiritual formation and discipleship;
  • Regional, national youth gatherings, retreats, adult education training events.
