The time is ripe for Evangelism!

There is a spiritual hunger in our society. People are coming to desire more in life than the shallow satisfactions that the world offers. Increasingly, people are longing for the power of mystery, transcendence, and real transformation. We know that the answer to these longings is freely available in Jesus Christ!

In case we didn't already feel the urgency of the Great Commission for our churches, the spiritual hunger we see in our society today should move us to resound Isaiah's heartfelt pledge: "Here am I; send me!"

Yet let’s be honest – it is not so easy to answer the call. Times have changed. The methods we used to use for evangelism don’t seem to work any more. The culture is changing. We’re sometimes unsure how to connect with the different people we meet. Churches are in decline – people don’t seem to be interested in what we have to offer.

But take heart. Jesus lives, the gospel is still the good news, and the Holy Spirit continues to promise to empower us to fulfill our commission … if we are willing to step up, learn anew, reach out, and speak anew.

Indeed, we should feel it a deep privilege to be called to the service of the Kingdom in times such as these. We stand on the threshold of a tremendous opportunity to share the saving, transforming, healing, reconciling, and liberating power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Imagine what we can do together in the Philadelphia area if we dedicate ourselves to the work of evangelism. Imagine the impact upon our communities if we can cultivate an evangelism movement. Imagine the effect it will have if PBA congregations develop new contextual strategies to share the power of the gospel to the spiritually hungry people of our communities.
